Marrakech #1

Finally, as this blog takes shape, here are the first pictures from mine and Ed's trip to Marrakech in July:

Our busy hotel, which looked so much more peaceful on the website. But since the summer holidays in France (and Holland it seems) had already begun we were overwhealmed by the amount of little French people splashing around in the pool. All in all, the hotel was pretty nice though, the air-con and poolside bar with the oranger-than-orange fanta were a life saver in the 44°C heat and the free shuttle bus into the city, which left from the front door of the hotel about 5 times a day, was probably one of my favourite things about the resort.

Day 1: Bit of sunbathing and getting into the Moroccan spirit!

The pool at night time, deserted...

Part of the Djemaa-El-Fna, where snake charmers, orange juice venders and Henna tattooists ("no money, no honey") assemble during the daytime in hope of overcharging tourists.

Treated ourselves to some Ice Cream at 'Ice Cream Legend', for 5MAD (about 40p) per scoop it was an absolutely amazing :)

Mint Teapots

The Souks were a little more shady but it's almost impossible to walk through them in the daytime without getting hassled by sellers ("You come to my shop, I sell spices"), which almost resulted in us getting led down a dark alley by a man who supposedly had a degree in hospitality...

After walking through the souks, we accidentally on purpose got to the Marrakech Museum, which was amazing on the inside with so many different colours and mosaics and doors. It was apparently built in the late 19th Century so it's not actually as old as I thought it was, especially considering it has an ancient Hamam inside but it wasn't converted into a Museum until 1997 and it's definitely worth a visit, even if it's just to cool down in the big hall.

(my camera was on a weird yellow-tone setting, which is rather sad, as these pictures probably would have come out a lot better)

Shameless self-timer posing in the Hamam of the Museum

Beautiful mosaics in the Art Gallery of the Museum

P.S. Thanks to my lovely housemate Sean, who taught me how to make this blogpost look like I want it to.
